Our pick

One Direction

One Direction -- There is no doubt that each of these artists is hot right now, but it could be called the summer of One Direction . When it comes to the power of teenage girls, One Direction may even beat out Justin Bieber. Both fun. and Maroon 5 have the hot band guy thing going, and Rihanna is always popular, but it may be One Direction’s day.

Best Rock Video

Linkin Park

"Burn It Down"

Directed by Joe Hahn

Linkin Park was formed in 1996 in California and their first album Hybrid Theory eventually sold 10 million albums. They were considered one of the first bands to combine rap and metal.

Coldplay

"Paradise"

Directed by Mat Whitecross

Coldplay was officially formed in 1998 by classmates in London. They released their first EP the same year, but shot to fame in 2000 after releasing Parachutes and the song "Yellow." Since then they have released four full-length albums and have sold millions of records worldwide. In 2011, they released Milo Xyloto and a few months later were nominated for three Grammy Awards.

Jack White

"Sixteen Saltines"

Directed by A.G. Rojas

Jack White is perhaps best known as half of the rock band, The White Stripes. The band formed in 1997 and broke up in 2011, but not before releasing six studio albums. White also had two other bands, the Raconteurs and Dead Weather.

White was named on Rolling Stone’s list of best guitarists and has appeared in numerous films, including Cold Mountain and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

The Black Keys

"Lonely Boy"

Directed by Jesse Dylan

The Black Keys are a rock duo that formed in 2001 in small-town Ohio. In 2003, they signed with Fat Possum Records and released their album, Thickfreakness.

The group played and toured for almost 10 years before "making it." Their 2010 album, Brothers, won three Grammy Awards. The album featured the song, "Tighten Up." In 2011, they followed that album up with El Camino, which made it as high as No. 2  on the Billboard album chart.

Our pick

Black Keys

Each band in the category has something going for it, and no two are very alike. But for this competition, we think Black Keys are going to win. The past few years have seen the rise of the indie-hipster and the Black Keys are just too cool for everyone’s own good. Which means, you want to be like them. Their new album has seen great reviews from critics and fans.

Best Hip-Hop Video

Childish Gambino

"Heartbeat"

Directed by Kyle Newacheck

Most any fan of pop culture knows Childish Gambino, even if they don’t realize it. The one-man hip-hop group is better known as Donald Glover. Glover plays the character Troy Barnes on the NBC show, Community. He has also written for, and starred in 30 Rock.

Childish Gambino released his first album, Camp, in November 2011 and regularly releases recordings through his website.

Drake f/ Lil Wayne

"HYFR"

Directed by Director X

Drake is a 25-year-old Canadian singer. He started his career as an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation, but on the side began releasing mixtapes. The project turned into his full time job and signed to Lil Wayne’s record label.

He released an EP in 2009 which hit the Billboard 150, and then recorded his first full-length studio album in 2010.

Drake also has written songs for Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx, among others. He also played Ethan in Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Kanye West f/Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz

"Mercy"

Directed by Nabil

Kanye West was a producer long before he became known as a rapper. He worked with local Chicago artists in the 1990s, but eventually rose to prominence in the craft. He was behind Jay-Z’s album, The Blueprint, and worked with artists Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Janet Jackson.

West released his first album in 2004. The College Dropout was followed by three more albums in four years. His albums have sold tens of millions of copies and digital singles worldwide.

Watch the Throne

"Paris"

Directed by Kanye West

Kanye West and Jay-Z make up the group Watch the Throne. The two rappers have been friends for a while and have helped each other on their own albums over the years .

This is Jay-Z and West’s first full album together. The album was released in August 2011.

Nicki Minaj f/ 2 Chainz

"Beez in the Trap"

Directed by Benny Boom

Nicki Minaj was born in 1982 in Trinidad and Tobago, but moved to Queens, New York, when she was only 5. When she was in her 20s, Minaj recorded three mixtapes, which earned her a recording contract. In November 2010, her album Pink Friday was released. It eventually went to No. 1 on the Billboard 150 chart and sold a million copies.

According to MTV, she became the first solo female artist to have seven singles on the Billboard 100 chart at the same time.

Minaj is rumored to be joining Mariah Carey as one of the new judges on American Idol.

Our pick

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino. OK, bear with us here. We know Childish Gambino is the underdog here. By a lot. Watch the Throne encompasses two of the most important rappers today, on top of Kanye West being nominated individually. Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne are also important artists in the hip-hop world.

But Childish Gambino has that underground following where he just may pull this off. His music is followed by lovers of all genres, and because he releases them as mixtapes on his website you know his followers know how to click their mouse to help him out.

Oh, and he got Tina Fey to rap on one of his songs. He deserves to win just for that feat.

The Wanted is from the United Kingdom, and lived "Friends-style" while in their early days. They have just started bringing their sound across the pond.

Our pick

Carly Rae Jepsen

This one is tough because of the amount of talent in this category. But Jepsen will win because you can guarantee the majority of the MTV audience has woken up with "Call Me Maybe" in their heads a minimum of 10 times in the past month. No matter what you think of the song, it is not something you can escape and it may be worth as many votes as she is going to get.

Best Female Video

Beyonce

"Love On Top"

Directed by Beyonce Knowles & Ed Burke

Beyonce Knowles has been in the spotlight almost all her life. When she was only nine years old, she joined Destiny’s Child. The group shared international success over the years, and in 2003 Beyonce decided to branch out.

Gomez has turned to music and started Selena Gomez & The Scene in 2008. The band has three gold albums and three platinum singles, including, "Love You Like a Love Song."

The actress and singer is currently dating singer Justin Bieber.

Our pick

Nicki Minaj

Like most of the categories, there is an immense amount of talent in this category. But for this one, we are going to go with Nicki Minaj. She is the wild card here and had a good year.

While we would hope for Beyonce out of fear Kanye West might take offense again, Minaj offers something a little different for a female category.

Best Male Video

Chris Brown

"Turn Up the Music"

Directed by Chris Brown

Chris Brown was raised in Virginia and signed to Jive Records when he was only 15 years old. One year later, he released his self-titled album which quickly became the No. 2 album in the country.

Since the album’s release, he has released four other albums, including 2012’s F.A.M.E.

Directed by Yoann Lemoine

In July, he released his first full-length album Channel Orange, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 150 chart.

Justin Bieber

"Boyfriend"

Soon he had a manager and caught the attention of both Usher and Justin Timberlake. He took Usher’s deal and signed to Island Records.

Bieber’s third studio album, Believe, was released on June 19, 2012.

Usher

"Climax"

Directed by Sam Pilling

Usher was born in Dallas and raised in Tennessee and learned to sing in the church. According to MTV, he then moved to Atlanta with his family in hopes of finding a more conducive place for a young singer.

When he was only 14, he auditioned for LA Reid, who signed him to a recording contract.

He didn’t make his mark until his second album in 1997. The then-19-year-old singer released My Way that year, featuring the songs "Nice and Slow" and "You Make Me Wanna."

Usher married his girlfriend in 2007. They were divorced in 2009, and in the summer of 2012, her son was in a boating accident and passed away weeks later.

Since 1997’s album, he has released six more albums, including 2012’s Looking 4 Myself.

Our pick

Justin Bieber

All right for this one, we will give it to Justin Bieber. The singer has millions upon millions of fans, most who bought his album. And his September tour sold out in less than an hour. When it comes to male artists, it could go in any direction. But in terms of the amount of success so far this year, Bieber may win it.

Kelly Clarkson

"Dark Side"

No matter what she does, Kelly Clarkson will probably always be known as the very first American Idol.

In 2006, their album the Sufferer and the Witness debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 150. In 2011, they released their album Endgame.

Our pick

Kelly Clarkson

Nobody says sweet innocent girl like Kelly Clarkson. And when it comes to a song with a message, Clarkson is a pro. From her beginnings on American Idol, she really became America’s sweetheart. Even if people don’t listen to the lyrics, Clarkson always gives off the feeling that life is OK. And so she deserves to win this one.

Video of the Year

Drake f/ Rihanna

"Take Care"

Rihanna f/ Calvin Harris

In 2008, Perry set out on the Warped Tour, where she was alongside then-boyfriend Travie McCoy, lead singer of Gym Class Heroes. They broke up in 2008, the same year she met Russell Brand. The two eventually married, but were divorced in 2012.

In 2010, Perry released her album Teenage Dream which included the songs "California Gurls" and "Last Friday Night."

In 2012, she released her movie, Part of Me.

Our pick

Drake and/or Rihanna

With the amount of news and success they’ve garnered this year, Drake and/or Rihanna are bound to win a lot this year. Drake was allegedly in a bar brawl with Chris Brown earlier this year over Rihanna, so their song together makes it even more interesting. The two are newsmakers, but more important, they’re both talented musicians. The video is a simple one, but sometimes that’s what it takes.

Together, the two singers have sold millions of albums, and people seem to be pulling for Rihanna this year.

Best Electronic Dance Music Video

Avicii

"Levels"

Directed by Petro

Calvin Harris

"Feels So Close"

Directed by Vincent Haycock

Duck Sauce

"Big Bad Wolf"

Directed by Keith Schofield

Martin Solveig

"The Night Out"

Directed by Tristan Seguela & Martin Solveig

Skrillex

"First of the Year "

Directed by Tony Truand

Our pick

Skrillex

While we’d like to say there is competition here, there may not be much. Skrillex seems to be the end of all for electronic music in the past year and both Skrillex fans and From First to Last fans alike will be online voting.

Best Art Direction

Drake f/Rihanna

"Take Care"

Art Direction by Charles INfante

Katy Perry

"Wide Awake"

Art Direction by Benji Bamps

Lana Del Rey

"Born to Die"

Art Direction by Anna Brun & Audrey Malecot

Of Monsters & Men

"Little Talks"

Art Direction by Mihal Wilson & Marcella Moser

Regina Spektor

"All The Rowboats"

Art Direction by Anthony Henderson

Our pick

Drake & Rihanna

This one could go either way. Drake & Rihanna are the obvious choice and their video can be described as a piece of art. But because this is a non-voting category, popularity does not necessarily factor in. Regina Spektor is a favorite amongst the music industry and her video could come out on top.

Best Choreography

Avicii

"Levels"

Choreography by Richy Greenfield & Petros Papahadjopoulos

Beyonce

"Countdown"

Choreography by Danielle Polanco, Frank Gatson Jr., Beyonce & Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

Chris Brown

"Turn Up the Music"

Choreography by Anwar "Flii" Burton

Jennifer Lopez f/Pitbull

"Dance Again"

Choreography by JR Taylor

Rihanna

"Where Have You Been"

Choreography by Hi-Hat

Our pick

Chris Brown

All the videos can be considered dance videos, but Chris Brown’s was just a little different. Avicii could always come in as the underdog, and is a great video, but since Fatboy Slim’s dance video, the quirky dance video hasn’t been very popular. Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Beyonce are doing what they do by creating a dance song and filming a purely dance video. But Brown’s choreography is something different, and something that makes us want to watch.

Best Cinematography

Adele

"Someone Like You"

Cinematography by David Johnson

Coldplay f/Rihanna

"Princess of China"

Cinematography by Stephanie Vallee

Drake f/Rihanna

"Take Care"

Cinematography by Kasper Tuxen

Lana Del Rey

"Born to Die"

Cinematography by Andre Chemetoff

M.I.A.

"Bad Girls"

Cinematography by Andre Chemetoff

Our pick

Coldplay & Rihanna

We're sure we can all agree that Adele is the sweetheart of 2011 and 2012, but for this category we think others have her beat. The Coldplay & Rihanna video is truly a film . It may be a little over the top, but you can tell they truly put the time into making it a work of art.

"Bad Girls"

Watch the Throne

"Otis"

Directed by Spike Jonze

Our pick

Kanye West of Jay-Z

It’s not just the names of Kanye West and Jay-Z that give this one to Watch The Throne. Nor is it the fact that they commissioned Spike Jonze to direct their video. Those things help. But the popularity of the project and the actual direction of the video makes us think this will come out on top. For the record, Frank Ocean’s video also makes the list.

Best Editing

A$AP Rocky

"Goldie"

Editing by Samantha Lecca

Beyonce

"Countdown"

Editing by Alexander Hammer & Jeremiah Shuff

Gotye f/Kimbra

"Somebody That I Used to Know"

Editing by Natasha Pincus

Kanye West f/ Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz

"Mercy"

Editing by Eric Greenburg

Watch the Throne

"Paris"

Editing by Alex Hammer, Peter Johnson & Derek Lee

Our pick

Gotye

Gotye may not be the best video nominated, but the editing is pretty dang good. It is a time-lapsed video of a painting and a man being painted. It is done in Celebrity Death Match-style, one frame at a time. We're sure it makes sense somewhere deep down, but if nothing else, it's a fun video to watch. And if the editor hadn’t had the patience, it likely wouldn’t have worked the way it does.

Best Visual Effects

David Guetta f/Nicki Minaj

"Turn Me On"

Visual Effects by Alex Frisch, Joe Harkins, Scott Metzger and Vico Sharabani

Katy Perry

"Wide Awake"

Visual Effects by Ingenuity Engine

Linkin Park

"Burn It Down"

Visual Effects by Ghost Town

Rihanna

"Where Have You Been"

Visual Effects by Baked FX

Skrillex

"First of the Year "

Visual Effects by Deka Bros & Tony T. Datis

Our pick

Skrillex

This one is a toss-up. David Guetta & Nicki Minaj have the most straightforward cool visual effects, and it likely will win. But there is something about Skrillex’s video that makes us want to see more. It is a great straightforward film-like video, and it deserves to win this category.
